Phoebe Stone, p. 8 from When the Wind Bears Go Dancing, Little, Brown and Company, 1997, pastel crayon on black paper, Lent by the Artist
Phoebe Stone paints, draws, writes poems, and creates and illustrates children's books. She has received several awards including the Vermont Council on the Arts Fellowship for Painting, twice. Her first book, In God's Name, written by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso, is a poem celebrating multiculturalism, and nondenominational and nonsectarian religion.
Stone was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design, and currently lives in Middlebury, Vermont. In 1984 her work was included in DeCordova's exhibition Contemporary New England Still Life. Stone's individual style with its glowing colors and fanciful images is inspired by images from dreams. Stone's new book, When the Wind Bears Go Dancing, which she wrote and illustrated, has recently been published.
