Alexi Antoniadis and Nico Stone are sculptors that trade in the world of skepticism. Using materials from plastic to plaster, smoke to metal, along with an inventive use of paint, this artist team fuses the world of painting and objects in trompe l’oeil sculptures. At first glance, their objects seem like modified readymades of reconfigured brick, wood, bits of shoes, and shopping carts – an interesting, un-monumental approach in reconfiguring our everyday, unnoticed environments. But with a closer look and a few visual clues (a plastic 6-pack ring holds up a concrete block, for example), we soon realize that these are fabricated – cast, painted, and shaped – sculptures. In essence, they are fakes. The artists dare us with each meticulously-made object to question what we see and what we think we are seeing. Painting the surfaces to mimic graffitied chunks of concrete or coating an object in dirt, they ask us to rethink our understanding of gesture, expression, and above all, realism.
