PLATFORM 5: Bartow + Metzgar

Dewey Family Gallery

November 16, 2010 – Spring, 2011

Over the past year, artists Paul Bartow and Richard Metzgar have built and manned a two-person structure in the Sculpture Park, the Morphology Field Station for Sensing Place, for their ongoing research into DeCordova's site. This fall they will unveil their findings with a large-scale installation in the Museum's Dewey Family Gallery. Typically reserved for DeCordova's permanent collection, the Dewey Gallery will be transformed into a living archive and reinterpretation of the Museum's physical, historical, and conceptual landscape. Architecture, drawings, photographs, videos, and found objects will be interspersed with selections for the Museum's collection as an in-depth examination of the complex relationship between land, time, and culture inherent in an art museum and park. The installation is titled Stratimentation: Investigations of a Metamorphic Landscape, a composite term that hints at the layered and complex nature of the project. You can follow Bartow + Metzgar's research progress on their blog at: http://stratimentation.wordpress.com.

The 2009-2010 PLATFORM series is funded in part by James and Audrey Foster. PLATFORM 5: Bartow + Metzgar will be accompanied by a brochure and is organized by Dina Deitsch, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art.
