Stephen DiRado
Stephen DiRado has spent many summers on Martha's Vineyard exploring the human dynamics fostered by a particular natural and cultural environment: the beach. His black-and-white photographs reveal the psychological and emotional intricacies within the microcommunities of friends, relations, and lovers which form in isolated, temporary encampments throughout the landscape. Simplistic clichés of summertime fun are avoided as DiRado captures the subtleties of gaze, posture, gesture, and facial expression which indicate rich human interactions. His photographs of individuals, like Gay Head, MA, July 24, 1995 – Juliana, reveal the complex psychological exchange between the photographer and his subject, intensified by their chance encounter (DiRado's subjects are never posed) and her social nudity. Related works from DiRado's series Beach People were shown in the DeCordova exhibition 11 Artists/11 Visions: 1992.
