Larry Fink
In the tradition of new social photography, Larry Fink's work reflects the mood of the period in American life that he photographs. His mastery of the electronic flash and high contrast printing creates a sensuality in the social and gestural postures of his subjects as well as rich textures unexpected in such documentation. In his prototypical American scenes, Fink reveals moments that are usually left undiscovered with a detachment and self consciousness which differentiates the "new" from the original social photographers. He is an outsider showing us the hidden lives of a cross section of America ranging from black-tie society to the blue-collar families shown in his Making Out 1957–1980 series. Fink's Praying Mantis series applies his techniques to the social landscapes of a different species and forces an ironic comparison between humans and insects.
