Mary Kocol

Mary Kocol explores the intersections of space, place, light, and architecture to create images of magic, mystery, and drama. According to the artist, "I am particularly intrigued by the drama of the ordinary. Familiar places transcend their ordinary context and for a short-lived moment, become something else. Moments, colors, and lights otherwise unseen by our eyes are brought to us through the magic of the times exposure. During a long exposure, the film "remembers" the actions of light moving before it and saves these moments on one frame so that they are seen as if they occurred at the same time." She goes on to explain, "The house sets the stage for the drama within the ordinary. It is where the delightful, the mysterious, and the disturbing can come together." Kocol has found inspiration for her surreal images in the intersections of natural and artificial light in her native Somerville, MA, in Italy, and in San Francisco. Illuminated House, San Francisco, CA, was shown in DeCordova's exhibition 10 Artists/10 Visions: 1994.
