Joel Meyerowitz

As a summer resident of Provincetown, Joel Meyerowitz explains that what he has found on Cape Cod is "the gift of being a contributor to the myth of the Cape itself." Truro, Cape Cod is one of a series of photographs taken around the Cape for a book and exhibition entitled Cape Light. Using a large format camera and slow speed film, Meyerowitz's curiosity, perseverance, and genuine pleasure in the art he calls "a game of sight," materializes in the concrete luminosity, clarity, and vibrancy of his photographs. Meyerowitz is concerned with the intuitive impression he has about a location and how that location achieves that impression through its space, materials, and light. In Truro, Cape Cod, he combines formalist and naturalist tendencies to create flat patches of color and form that challenge perspective while capturing the architecture and vegetation characteristic of summertime on the Cape.
