Salley Mavor graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in illustration and then attended Syracuse University to study in the printmaking department. Her illustration technique is based on the assemblage of parts to create a scene. She learned to sew as a child, and now works in fabric relief; every item is dyed, embroidered and sewn by hand. The three-dimensional pieces in her illustrations are made from covered and stuffed cardboard shapes, wrapped wire figures, beach stones, driftwood, and swatches of fabric. The pieces are then placed on a detailed cloth background and photographed to become the pages of a picture book.

Since 1991, she has had four books published; The Way Home by Judith Benét Richardson, Come to My Party by Judith Benét Richardson, Mary Had A Little Lamb by Sarah Josepha Hale and You and Me: Poems of Friendship. She is currently working on the illustrations for another book, The Holly Hock Wall, which will be published in two years. Salley Mavor lives in Woods Hole, Massachusetts with her family.
