Theo Appel

Emergency Series #6, 1998, oil on canvas, 67" x 67"
Appel’s images of infants are a far cry from what our culture generally values as "baby pictures." The work features close-cropped and idiosyncratic points of view. The images are unsentimental, gender-neutral, and accepting of uncomfortable details. Presented in this manner, Appel’s subjects transcend mere babyhood to become signifiers of the human condition; metaphors for the challenges, joys, and disappointments of consciousness and inexorable aging.
