Jill Slosburg-Ackerman

Jill Slosburg-Ackerman, Modified, 1998

Modified, 1998, wood, sawdust, glue, 45" x 16" x 16"

Slosburg-Ackerman creates biomorphic wood sculptures that are hybrids of the human and natural worlds. They are suggestive of plant forms, mutated trees from a primeval forest, planetary configurations, or human figures, though not specific enough to be absolutely defined as any one particular thing. The abstract yet referential nature of Slosburg-Ackerman’s sculptures descends from the tradition of African woodcarvings, as well as the work of 20th c. sculptors such as Brancusi, Noguchi, and Puryear.
