Cynthia Atwood , Up and Over, 1999

Up and Over, 1999, wood and rattan armature, assorted fabrics, 22" x 33" x 33", photo credit:
John Polak

My work is an exaggerated reference to the body and its bestiality.

The materiality, sensuality, and labor contained in my work are all expressions of the body.

In these pieces the monster of sexuality raises its ugly little head. Or is that head beautiful and big? sweet? grotesque? exuberant? stylish? humorous? suburban? frightening?

Our sexuality is constant and our desires are never quite hidden. No matter how we cover and sublimate, we are revealed.
