Amy Cutler, Catch, 1997

Catch, 1997, gouache on paper, 14" x 20"

Something seen out of the corner of your eye. You saw it, so it exists; but on second glance you realize it's nothing unusual. Something strange you hear seems implausible, but somehow more interesting than what is actually said.

Terrors and wonders manifest and breed in these moments of misinterpretation. The subconscious rises to the surface, fed by paranoia and curiosity. These terrifying and curious ideas become literal metaphors in my work.

Parts of the figure are replaced by objects that embody a certain function, which dictates a character's purpose or role. The narrative is created by the inclusion or exclusion of certain parts or objects. No conclusions are offered, just bridges to other mishaps. These works are about the segues between disconnected thoughts that visit illogical and dysfunctional places.
