Gate Gargoyle #3 (detail), 1999 – 2000, clay, steel, masonite, 77" x 15" x 20"
Consequences of the industrial revolution brought about critical issues regarding our environment. We focused on production and neglected our natural surroundings. However, many industries and individuals have become acquainted with the issues and have attempted themselves to reduce the damages we have caused.
For instance, Misawa, a building company in Japan, is pursuing technological developments which contribute to environmental conservation. Employing their current technology, they have developed unique residential housing for the market, which is constructed with 100% recycled materials and a 100% self-sufficient power source applied with active solar panels.
This is an example of a perfect unification between our consciousness, nature (environment) and technology. This ideally synthesized conception is fragile without our consciousness. The way gargoyles on churches and temples have been protecting the buildings from evil spirits for hundreds years, my gargoyles convey the invulnerability of the concept to the audience.
