Sisters, 1997, vitreous china with stain and glaze, Six figures 60"–72" tall, in 96" circle
With each sculpture, I attempt to preserve a particular human condition. I am primarily interested in human expression: how we relate to ourselves and others and how our experiences shape who we are. The human figure, it's gesture and physiognomy, are where my forms begin. I then alter, distort or fragment the figure to create individuals who embody their state-of-being. The formal characteristics of each sculpture are a manifestation of how that individual feels, as if the internal has seeped to the surface.
The Sisters are constructed of interlocking vertebrae which create spines, or totems, for human heads. They form a circle as if in conversation and each assumes a role in their dialogue. The archeological overtones imply that their questions, like ours, are eternal.
