Crab Hand, 1989, bronze, 2" x 11" x 5"

As I recall, it was in the early nineties that the newspapers and TV were frequently reporting on developments in biology. They cited new science of "cloning" which made it possible to create an exact replica of a living animal. There were reports that told of scientists who were extracting DNA from one species and introducing into the DNA of a different species. In effect, they were creating mutations.

All of that triggered an idea I found intriguing. I would create my own mutations. I carried the idea to the point of absurdity in a series of bronzes. These bronzes may bring a smile of amusement to the viewer but I should mention that there is an underlying admonition: Be careful, scientists, a mutation could be created that would be extremely dangerous to the future of all nature.
