Gateways, 2002, multimedia installation, 11' x 22' x 11'
Gateways is a multimedia installation which addresses loss, the fragmentation of memory, and the places which exist in our hearts. It intends to evoke ethnicity and culture as a specific, and yet mutable state of existence that can change with time and circumstances beyond our control.

The title refers to the relocation of first the body, and later, the spirit. The pervasive use of gold alludes to the mythical belief held by many immigrants, that the streets of America were paved with gold. The project evolved from a dream I had after my mother passed away from Alzheimer's disease, shortly before September 11, 2001. In its most collective sense, this project is a tribute to all immigrants who passed through the "gateways" of Ellis Island to a life of great possibilities.
