Kenneth Speiser, Self Portrait—Right Ring, 2001

Self Portrait—Right Ring, 2001, 6,250 pieces of colored movie film leader, 6,250 stainless steel pins, vellum, Homosote, 30" x 22"

Generally speaking I make sculptures, but lately I have been working in a two-dimensional format, using an assortment of materials (35mm slides, video tape, movie leader, color negative movie film, floppy disks, audio cassette tape) and techniques (monoprinting with sandpaper, for example).

Working flat has really opened a door inward, creating a path to other parts of my brain, a place where I keep a different set of tools and ideas. I work on paper, to surprise myself in a new way.

My work tends to be about material usage, interactivity with the viewer, and the process of making large ideas out of many small parts.
