Pollen Terrains, 2000, color photographs of pitch pine pollen forms, Museum Purchase, 2000.31

Doug Bosch approaches his art like a scientist. By using natural and synthetic materials, he experiments with processes to find out what the different materials will do when subjected to various conditions. Bosch began collecting pitch-pine pollen in 1996 at a lakefront in northern New Hampshire. As he experimented with it as a medium, he learned that pollen could be used as a paint or stain when mixed with linseed oil or as a solid, sculptural material if left in its powdery state. Pollen Terrains illustrates various shapes that the pitch-pine pollen randomly created in its interaction with its environment. Bosch displays the images of these organic forms in a methodical grid, indicating his search for an aesthetic control over the patterns that emerge form random arrangements. These photographs were purchased from The 2000 DeCordova Annual Exhibition.
