Drawing #3, from the “Scratchboard Series”, 2003, scratchboard drawing, Museum Purchase, 2003.55

For The 2003 DeCordova Annual Exhibition, Jane Masters created wallpaper made from hand silk-screened prints that were attached directly to the wall. She laboriously and methodically created hundreds of prints in order to create one continuous pattern. Masters favors repetitive, symmetrical patterns and meticulously drawn coiled and spiraling shapes. For the exhibition, Masters hung a number of her black and white scratchboard drawings on the wallpaper. These two drawings, purchased from the exhibition, relate to the wallpaper in their geometric and organic abstract shapes, compressed energy, and dynamic form.
