Under My Skin, 1997–2000, metal spoon, wool, oil, cotton batting, Museum Purchase, 2001.73

Janice Redman's sculptures are remarkable compositions of ordinary utensils and other things found in her kitchen. The daughter of a seamstress and clock restorer, Redman explains, "My work is directly rooted in my everyday experience and my own personal history." Spoons, stoppers, cups and saucers, and other common household utensils are preciously preserved, stuffed, wrapped and sewed in soft, dingy cloth or enclosed in hydrocal plaster. Muffling both the sounds and functions of these domestic objects, Redman transforms them into surrealist works that are now useless but powerful expressions of form and material. Under my Skin was purchased from The 2001 DeCordova Annual Exhibition.
