Bad Equilibrium, 2006, cast bronze and patina, 32' x 18" x 4", Lent by the Artist

Gómez’s sculpture is inspired by graphic imagery ranging from early Arabic cartography to mathematical and scientific notations. When converted from two-dimensional drawings to three-dimensional sculptural forms, this data transforms into poetic metaphor. For The 2006 DeCordova Annual Gómez has specially designed a large-scale bronze relief for the Museum’s dramatic elevator wall space.

"Like most of my sculptural works, Bad Equilibrium exists in a place between the physical/dimensional, and the graphic. Cast bronze with a dark patination make substantive that which we understand as two-dimensional information. Inspired by the DeCordova’s stairwell wall, I designed a piece which defines the wall’s unusual proportions. Bad Equilibrium uses Science information as subject matter, a theme I have often explored. While Science serves many as a means for defining and understanding our universe, it too can be personalized and co-opted to meet our individual needs. 'Equilibrium' can be defined as a state of balance between opposing forces. Bad Equilibrium subverts the true physical nature of fluid in a 'manometer' to represent a complicated, personal, and undesirable scenario." —Gregory Miguel Gómez
