Slices of Life (detail), 2006, site-specific, mixed-media wall installation with watercolor on paper, found objects, pins, and mica, dimensions variable, Lent by the Artist
Jen Simms collects, accumulates, and arranges material from her surroundings in elaborately pinned wall installations. She uses a combination of found and natural objects and hand-made watercolors that coalesce into larger, organic forms.
"Sometimes thought of as a time capsule, a midden is defined as a packrat nest, refuse heap, or shell mound. The giant egg-shapes that make up this installation are based on the idea of a personal midden. Like slices of life, they contain cultural and ecological information inspired by my everyday activities as a mother and as an artist.
The found objects to which I am drawn are curious in some way. At first glance, the object may not be recognizable. Often there is a blur between what is natural and what is man-made. Perhaps it is a question of identity, is it an angora pompom or a milkweed seed explosion? Am I an artist or a mom? Allowing both identities to co-exist, merging both family and art, has resulted in a work that is grounded in real life. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment." —Jen Simms
