Necee Regis: Flight Patterns
Grand Staircase
June 8, 2002 - January 2003
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 13, 2002, 6 - 9 pm
LINCOLN, MA-For the Museum's next installation on the large wall at the foot of the Grand Staircase, Boston artist Necee Regis has created 25 images based on commercial jet airplanes. The black images of airplanes are painted with oil stick on paper and then mounted on irregularly shaped masonite panels. These will be installed on the wall in a pattern that stretches from top to bottom.
Flight Patterns has many layers: the airplane images refer to commercial flight and navigation routes, they also reference birds and their migration patterns, and likewise can be read formally, as black marks on white surfaces. Although the concept for the installation was developed before September 11, 2001, images of airplanes take on a whole new set of meanings today. Regis has considered the way the images will be read from inside as well as outside the Museum building, where the black forms may appear as birds that have swooped in from outside.
