David Berry gracefully combines stainless steel and cast glass to create evocative abstract sculptures. The artist sees these three works as related segments of his personal artistic vision, of a larger series of sculptures, and of a larger aesthetic continuum marked by shared materials, shapes, symmetry, and multiple meanings. Individually, each sculpture is elegant and mysterious. Together, the works suggest alchemical vessels or advanced technological apparatus, tools of a mad scientist or probes from other worlds.
Sphere IV, 1995, stainless steel, cast glass, bronze, 9' 4" x 18' 7" x 6', Lent by the Artist
David Berry is an emerging artist who primarily creates sculptures which gracefully blend glass and metal elements. Sphere IV is his first major outdoor work, and the DeCordova Sculpture Park is its first exhibition venue. The sculpture, a large burnished steel sphere with a long cantilevered linear appendage, calls to mind alchemical vessels, medical apparatus, underwater diving equipment, or science-fiction fantasies reminiscent of the tales of Jules Verne. According to the artist, positive responses to Sphere IV include "a mad scientific experiment, some organic object, or some part of a greater whole."
