Bemoth, 1999, maple, aircraft cable, 100" x 100" x 96'; Lent by the Artist; Site-specific Installation
Bill Botzow is a sculptor who works directly in the landscape, using natural materials to build aesthetic and conceptual bridges between the energies of art and nature. His work is often site-specific, designed with the particularities of individual places in mind: materials, scale, proportions, colors, visitor approaches to the site, and the changing nature of the site with weather and seasons.
Bemoth was designed expressly for this majestic oak tree in the DeCordova Sculpture Park. This monumental, 96-foot long structure of twigs and branches is held in place by gravity and a single airline cable. Its shape and construction suggest both temporary architecture and a giant descending insect. The enigmatic title refers to both the size of the sculpture (behemoth) and its entomological associations (bee, moth).
