Rain Drop, 1994, cedar, steel, fiberglas, 10' 6" x 14' x 14', Lent by the Artist.
Rain Drop is an example of a major tendency in contemporary outdoor sculpture, in which artists explore relations among sculpture, architecture, and furniture. Based loosely on American gazebo forms and elements from ian architecture, the sculpture is a small waiting station which celebrates the natural process of rain. Water is caught by a reverse pyramidal roof and gently spills onto a miniature rock garden framed by four inward-looking chairs. The artist refers to the work as "a place apart, close to the elemental rhythms of nature, where a person might achieve a new perspective on life in an increasingly complex urban world." Rain Drop, a meditative space, is intended to be interactive—the presence of visitors completes the sculpture.
