Sculptor Breon Dunigan says that she, “looks for beauty where one least expects to find it. I look closely at things we don’t want to see, the things that make us uncomfortable and try to find some beauty there.” Her sculptures often abstractly reference the human body, incorporating found objects such as doorknobs, lamp parts, vessels, and furniture legs that suggest the form the completed sculpture will assume.
While Dunigan sculpts primarily in plaster and found metal, Guardian, Hearing Trumpet, and Torsion are among her pieces in bronze. These three sculptures “return ‘legs’ of furniture back to animal form”, a concept explored in many of Dunigan’s works. Each unique sculpture stands alone as an individual character, while also relating to the group, and each work has a slightly different surface patina, their characteristic rounded bodies tapering to three distinct tops. Like unusual animals, Dunigan’s whimsical bronzes balance on borrowed legs, exemplary of the wit and irony the artist captures in all of her sculptures.
