Sheet Music, 1998, steel, 118" x 131" x 160", Lent by the Artist
Rico Eastman creates large-scale, steel sculptures that address themes of random order, pattern, and space. Sheet Music, which weighs approximately 3,000 pounds, is comprised of a series of interlocking planes that curve and slip into one another. The pieces are held in place by gravity and weight tensions on the points of transition.
According to the artist, "the sheets are stacked in such a way that reveals overlapping patterns which in turn evokes internal rhythms." Contained within these patterns are spaces that break up the surface. Eastman links these spaces to the title of the piece by stating, "to follow the analogy of music, one would refer to these spaces as rests, the place in the music where silence is used to create interval."
