Lila Katzen

(1932-1998)

X Notion Like an H, 1978, weathered steel, 12' x 8' x 4', DeCordova Permanent Collection 1983.8, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Ivani

Lila Katzen's X Notion Like an H displays many of the salient features of outdoor sculpture of the 1970s. Stylistically, its large confrontational scale, simple abstract geometric forms, and symmetry derive from Minimalism. Its material—rolled, weathered steel—is also characteristic of the era. Katzen chose to let the natural patina of rust form the surface of her work. According to the artist, "The concept of the X is the strength of interaction...in the act of becoming or exchanging identities, much as a human being changes by movement or posture but still maintains the primary gestalt."
