Sachaquea, 1981, welded steel, 36" in diameter, Lent by Cathleen Malpass.
Michael Malpass created over 300 spherical sculptures during his artistic career. Malpass described the sphere as "the most perfect form," and stated that "the form is simple, yet the surface is complicated. The sculpture is animated, yet peaceful." To create his spherical sculptures, Malpass rummaged through junkyards for metal objects and scraps. He would then either forge or use a band saw to mold these found objects into arched forms. These forms would then be welded to create a sphere. Malpass completed this process by giving his sculptures a polished, painted, or wire-brushed finish. In Sachaquea, found objects interlock and flow over the curves of the sphere, creating harmonious surface detail and subtle illusions of motion.
