When A Man Loves A Woman, 1998, vinyl on wood, 7' x 4'6" x 8', Lent by the Artist
Louise McKissick works in performance, installation and digital media. To better engage viewers, she often adopts a humorous approach in works that deal with themes such as popular culture, feminism and gender issues. When A Man Loves A Woman was created from an image found at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin. McKissick scanned this artifact onto an advertising billboard to create the look of an old-time amusement-park attraction. The image in When A Man Loves A Woman, a man casting knives at a woman, puts an ironic twist on the title. The openings for the viewers' faces encourage participation and provide the work with a sense of levity in light of the underlying theme of gender inequity and violence.
