Sculpture Park

Teen to Screen is a collaborative project with DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Moody Street Pictures, and the Waltham High School. It takes the form of a year-long accredited course at the WHS with students from grades ten through twelve. The focus of the course is for the students to learn about a few key artworks in DeCordova’s 35-acre Sculpture Park and make short videos about them.

Staff and faculty from all three organizations teach the student-directed course, which runs twice a week and after school. For many classes the students are bused to the Museum to learn about looking at and interpreting sculpture, the creative process of artists, museum careers, art history, and Web page design. While learning about the sculpture, the students are simultaneously learning about making videos through the process of designing, storyboarding, filming, recording audio, and editing for their productions. To enhance their research, the students look at the current exhibitions in the Museum and review and critique Web sites and videos made by other teens and professionals. Throughout the year the students work with guest artists to make their own sculpture, interview Park artists, and visit artists studios and film production studios.
