Jon Petro recognizes the fact that humans innately develop associations with images at all times, and as a painter one must develop a personal dialogue as a foundation for artistic expression. The artist has painted in many different styles and now considers himself to be working backwards. His work attempts to remove all associations with the images that he has maintained a dialogue with over the years. By working with abstract imagery, the work has no association with anything other than itself and it holds a greater connection to the gesture and movement that the artist has used to create it.
Petro studied at the Worcester Art Museum and Clark University, Worcester, MA. His work has been included in shows at the Wheeler Gallery, Providence, RI, Jonathon Podolsy Gallery, Northampton, MA, Hampden Gallery at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, and MPG Contemporary, Boston, MA, among others.
